It seems that the outages that are plaguing Sony Playstation gamers could not have come at a worst time. The outage has come at a rather unfortunate time for SCEE as Portal 2, Mortal Combat 4 and SOCOM 4 all come with online game play and with a rely heavily on the PSN network.
Adding insult to injury the outage has occurred in what in a lot of places is a long weekend meaning a lot of gamers would be expected to play online. In the meantime Sony is trying to play down their issues by being less than forthcoming regarding their network problems.
Microsoft, on the other hand, seems to be doing much better. At the same time that the PSN has gone offline, they have launched their Xbox Nations Online Event, which will see millions of gamers invited to play online for free this weekend. Of course Microsoft has declared that they expect more players online this weekend and have taken the opportunity to boost their network reliability.
When asked about the possibility of an increase in sales of the Xbox 360 console due to loss of connection on the PSN, the reps at Microsoft really did not have any comment, but it's only a logical conclusion that if a lot of people have problems with the PSN, they might start to reconsider their choice of gaming device and down the road we could see gamers switching from the PS3 to the Xbox 360 due to network reliability.
All in all it seems that even though Microsoft will not publicly acknowledge it, the fact that the PSN has been down for two days is proven to provide Microsoft in a better position against the competition and might in the long run affect game and console sales.
