Prey 2 officially announced

Although 3D Realms is notorious for stretched release dates, we did not realize it could be as long as it has been for Prey 2.The game was initially designed by 3D Realms in the mid-'90s, eventually given over to Human Head Studios, who along with 2K Games finished it in 2006. For its follow-up, Human Head has cut that development cycle in half.

Today, after the rumors over the weekend about the release dates of Prey 2 fueled by french gaming magazine Joystick, Bethesda Softworks made the official announcement saying that the so awaited game will arrive for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in 2012. The Prey IP was acquired by Bethesda Softworks parent ZeniMax Media in mid-2009, and the publisher subsequently filed US trademark applications to use the property in a variety of mediums, ranging from video games to TV shows to comic books.

Bethesda did not indicate what can be expected from Prey 2, saying only that the game would be developed by Human Head and will make use of an unspecified id Software engine: “We are thrilled to be working with Bethesda on Prey 2,” said project lead, Chris Rhinehart. We are going to take a guess and say that more than likely Bethesda will be using the id tech 5 engine, which is the same game engine that is being used in Rage. It was also noted that first details for the game will arrive in the May issues of the Official Xbox Magazine and PlayStation: The Official Magazine.

UPDATE: We have now confirmed that the new Prey 2 will not be using the new Id Tech 5 game engine. Pete Hines told computer and video games that "it really wasn't an option" so we will just have to wait and see what would be the final product and its game engine.
