Nintendo unveils new Wii U at E3 2011

Nintendo has unveiled today the new Nintendo Wii U. The announcement came this morning during the E3 conference in Los Angeles.

Prior to the official unveil, the rumored new Nintendo Wii has been called the Wii 2, Wii HD and project cafe so as of today the new console has an official name and some specs that we can confirm as official.

The new Wii U will come with a wireless controller that has a 6.2 inch touchscreen display. It has the expected controllers suchj as the directional pad (D-pad) as well as the regular A,B,X and Y buttons for game functionality and finally the triggers at the top of the controller.

Aside from the new screen, the new Wii U controller will have a gyroscope and accelerometers that will allow players to affect the game by moving the controller in any direction. The controller additionally comes with built-in speakers and a microphone.

Another innovative feature that the Wii U controller will have is the ability to transfer the game played on a TV or monitor to the controller itself. So the player could actually turn the TV off and continue the game with the controller in hand.

The controller can be used to fully interact with the game in a three-dimensional way. For example, at a game showing in Nintendo's E3 event, arrows being shot at the players from characters on the TV could be stopped from hitting the players by using the controller's screen as a shield.

Although it's important to make the clear distinction that while the games can be made three dimensional interactive, they are not 3D games themselves. It's not clear at this point if the new Nintendo Wii U will support the 3D technologies that Sony or Microsoft had been supporting for sometime now.

The Will U will also feature 1080p HD output on proprietary discs that will be the same size as the current Wii game discs. Nintendo also talked about some of the games in development such as Super Smash Bros that can be played simultaneously with the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS, Some game prototypes such as Chase Mii and Battle Mii. Nintendo also showed a remastered version of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess that showed the Wii U's HD output capabilities, better and more detailed graphics were the main feature of this game.

With the new Wii U Nintendo finally comes back into competitive ground with Sony and Microsoft, bringing a console that will support HD and provides much more interactivity than its predecessor. The new Wii U will support current Wii peripherals and aims to please both experience and casual gamers. Nintendo has declared that there is much more to come, and that the Wii U has opened the doors for deeper game experiences.
