Mortal Kombat 2011 Preview

Wednesday, 09 March 2011 21:06 Published in Reviews
A game writer at a large convention will occasionally book a variety of meetings with a company just to be polite. Such was the case with the latest Mortal Kombat game. I agreed to the meeting only because of my interest in Batman: Arkham City, as both games are being published by Warner Bros. In such cases, writers go into the meeting, dutifully play for a few minutes while listening to the pitch, and never think of the game again. Yes, it sounds dishonest, but it's also a defense mechanism against being overwhelmed.

Fight Night Champion Review

Tuesday, 01 March 2011 10:02 Published in Reviews

Fight Night Champion is a multiplayer boxing game for play on Xbox 360 that blends traditional one-on-one pugilistic action of previous games in the Fight Night franchise with new, more gritty story-driven gameplay rooted in the all-new Champion Mode. Game features include: unprecedented precision and accuracy of punches; local and online multiplayer support for four and ten players respectively; and a cast of more than 50 boxers from multiple eras and weight classes.

De Blob 2 Review

Friday, 25 February 2011 10:13 Published in Reviews

The blob known as Blob made his debut in de Blob when it landed on the Wii in 2008, introducing the world to a funky new hero whose ability to absorb color and spread it around was put to great use in that charming platformer. Now, Blob is back, but while fostering political revolution through paint is as intrinsically enjoyable as ever, a nasty tendency to punish you severely for failure and a few other issues prevent this outing from being as enjoyable as the first.

Dragon Age II Review

Tuesday, 25 January 2011 10:00 Published in Reviews

EA and BioWare have shown that there's still room for fun in the dark fantasy world of Dragon Age--at least when it comes to promoting the upcoming sequel. This past summer, they silently introduced Dragon Age II at San Diego Comic-Con with a showing so free of advance warning that it would make the stealthiest of ninjas jealous. That hands-on demo showed a snippet of combat that was markedly bloodier and more over the top than its predecessor, a change that generated quite a lot of questions about the direction of this critically acclaimed role-playing series.

Ilomilo Review

Thursday, 06 January 2011 22:32 Published in Reviews

At its root, ilomilo is simply a puzzle game. Each level is composed of purposely organized rows and stacks of cubes that must be traversed between two characters to have them reunited. At its heart, however, ilomilo is an adorably pleasant game centered on equally cute protagonists. ilo and milo are the best of friends, and reuniting them is your task as the player. Although the storyline is thin at its core, that simplicity is perfectly suited to the nature of the game.

Review : Mass Effect 2

Friday, 04 June 2010 11:21 Published in Reviews

Mass Effect is one of my favorite games of the past decade. Despite its technical shortcomings, BioWare's first in what it promised to be a trilogy took the role-playing genre to new cinematic heights. Mass Effect 2 is a better game in near every way. From the very first scene, you will be hooked. And the farther you dive into this epic action role-playing game, the better it gets. It fulfills the promise of its predecessor while continuing to push the boundaries of what we should expect in a videogame.

Gears of War 3 Brotherhood of Resistance

Tuesday, 27 July 2010 06:08 Published in Coming Soon
Gears of War 3  had some of the most strategic multiplayer at E3. It makes us wonder: has design director Cliff Bleszinski been playing a lot of Team Fortress 2 lately? As part of E3, Epic provided hands-on time with Gears 3's new "Beast Mode," in which players finally take control of the franchise's antagonists, the Locusts. Think Horde Mode meets The Trojan Women. Players can co-op as a hodgepodge of Locust species -- from Maulers to Wretches -- to slaughter A.I.-controlled human scum. Each of these species comes bundled with distinct controls and style-of-play.
